About The Program
The Professional Science Master's (PSM) degree is an innovative graduate degree designed to allow students to pursue advanced training and excel in science while simultaneously developing highly-valued business skills without acquiring a PhD or MBA. PSM programs are characterized by instruction in advanced science or mathematics, a business component, and an internship providing a "real world" work experience. They produce a brand of workers referred to as "T-shaped" individuals, those with both deep knowledge of a specific discipline and broad knowledge of the communications and relational skills necessary to excel in any business and adapt to a changing workplace.
The PSM in Biotechnology is a non-thesis, non-research degree.
The first year of study consists of core science and biotechnology-specific courses as well as a "plus" course that exposes students to a broad spectrum of business concepts and issues common to biotechnology companies such as innovation management; intellectual property; strategic entrepreneurship and business planning; capital formation and corporate finance; government regulation; general management; marketing; and mergers, acquisitions, and strategic alliances. The cornerstone of the first year is a laboratory training course in state-of-the-art proteomics and biotechnology techniques including mass spectrometry.
The second year of study consists of courses specific to the student's chosen track (concentration). The internship provides a "real-world" learning opportunity in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
The Program has three tracks:
- molecular biotechnology training focuses on genomics, proteomics, and drug discovery pathways
- pharmaceutical biotechnology training focuses on drug development and evaluation
- engineering biotechnology training focuses on process engineering
